Playa Cavancha is the reason Iquique feels like a beach resort that happens to have a desert attached. The bay curves for well over a kilometre between the city centre and the rocky Cavancha peninsula, which takes the force out of the Pacific swell and makes this the safest stretch of sand in town for swimming.
Behind the sand runs the costanera, a landscaped seafront promenade with palms, cycle lanes, playgrounds, fountains and outdoor gyms that continues south towards Playa Brava. Above it all stands the brown wall of the coastal range, which glows orange at sunset. Most of the city’s hotels, and many of its restaurants and bars, sit within a few blocks.
Top things to do at Playa Cavancha
Swim, sunbathe and people-watch
The water is cooled by the Humboldt Current and stays fresh all year — warmest from January to March. Lifeguards are normally on duty in the main season; swim where the locals swim and heed the flags. Sun loungers, umbrellas and snacks can be hired or bought on the sand in summer.
Walk or cycle the costanera
The promenade is flat, lit and busy from early morning until late. Walk north towards the centre or south round the peninsula towards Playa Brava, a wide, wilder beach that is fine for walking and kites but generally not for swimming because of its currents.
Surf or bodyboard
Iquique is one of Chile’s surf capitals, with reef breaks that work most of the year. Beginners take lessons at the gentler end of Cavancha; experienced surfers and bodyboarders head for the heavier reef waves off the peninsula and the rocky shore to the north. Local schools rent boards and wetsuits.
Watch a paraglider land
Tandem flights launched from Alto Hospicio, on the cliff top, often land on or near the beaches. From the sand you can watch the wings circle down over the towers in the afternoon — and book your own flight.

How to get to Playa Cavancha
- On foot: Cavancha is roughly 2 km south of Plaza Prat; the walk along the seafront takes about half an hour.
- By taxi or colectivo: shared colectivo taxis and buses run along the coastal avenue, Avenida Arturo Prat, all day; a taxi from the centre takes a few minutes.
- From the airport: about 40 km and 40–45 minutes by transfer or taxi along the coast road — see getting to Iquique.
Insider tips
- The sun is fierce even when the morning is overcast — the coastal cloud usually burns off by midday. Use high-factor sunscreen.
- Do not leave bags unattended on the sand or valuables visible in a parked car.
- Signs along the seafront mark tsunami evacuation routes. Note the nearest one: if you feel a strong earthquake, walk uphill without waiting for an alarm.
- Summer weekends and Chilean holidays in January and February are busy; come early for space.
